Kings College Hospital

Kings College Hospital were carrying out a much needed refurbishment and upgrade of their existing maternity ward. This included the birthing rooms, nurse stations, washing facilities and corridors.

The refurbishment also included the upgrade of the main air handling unit in order to cope with additional fresh air requirements. The key requirement from the hospital was that it had to all be done in phases whilst keeping the rest of the ward operational.

Size - 15,000 ft2
Duration - 24 Weeks
Location - South London
Sector - Healthcare
Challenges:

The biggest challenge we faced was to carry out all these works in a critical care hospital which had to remain live and operational throughout the duration of the project.

The upgrade of the air handling unit was also a big challenge as it meant that the unit had to be turned off so we could upgrade the motor and other internal parts.

As this meant there was no air supply for a time we had to do this in a very narrow time slot and there was no margin for error.

Solutions:

There was a very intensive design phase to this project to fully ensure that every detail was considered before the project commenced.

We liaised closely with all departments in the hospital to ensure there was minimal disruption during the works and the project was split into four phases to ensure the facility could continue functioning at all times.
